Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - James Kaprielian matched his career high with nine strikeouts and Jorge Mateo blasted his first home run of the season as the Tampa Yankees (9-6) defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays (8-7), 10-4, on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa claimed the series win, 2-1.

Miguel Andujar drew a leadoff walk against Dunedin starter Kyle Westwood in the second. A single by Zack Zehner placed runners on the corners and Andujar scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Santiago Nessy. Zehner scored as Austin Aune grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

Kaprielian retired the first six batters he faced before running into a jam in the third. Danny Jansen singled and Michael De La Cruz tied the game with a home right to right. Derrick Loveless doubled, but was later caught stealing third as Kaprielian worked out of the frame.

Tampa regained the lead in the third, taking a 4-2 lead with four consecutive singles by Mateo, Abiatal Avelino, Mark Payton and Andujar.

A two-out rally in the fifth helped the T-Yanks pull away. Payton walked, stole second and scored on a single by Andujar. Zehner and Nessy both walked, loading the bases. LHP Jose Fernandez relieved Westwood and Aune greeted him with a two-run single, giving Tampa a 7-2 advantage.

Westwood (0-1) surrendered seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in four and two-third innings. The righty walked four and struck out three.

Kaprielian (2-1) worked through the sixth, tossing 57 of his 84 pitches for strikes. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on four hits, walking one batter.

Avelino and Payton hit back-to-back doubles off Fernandez in the sixth, adding Tampa's eighth run.

Dunedin took advantage of a wild Jacob Lindgren in the seventh. Emilio Guerrero reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored on three wild pitches. Lindgren walked the first two batters in the eighth before RHP Dillon McNamara took the hill. An RBI single by Ryan McBroom brought the tying run to the plate, but McNamara got a pop out from Guerrero and a strikeout from D.J. Davis to end the threat.

Michael O'Neill legged out an infield single off RHP Brad Allen in the bottom of the eighth and scored on Mateo's long ball over the left field wall, giving Tampa a 10-4 lead.

RHP Jordan Foley worked around a two-out walk to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Mateo (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) recorded his third three-hit game. Payton (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R, SB) had five RBI in the series. Andujar (2-for-3, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R) is second on the team with 11 RBI. Aune (2-for-4, 2 RBI) recorded his third multi-RBI game.

Up next, the Yankees stay home for a three-game series with the Daytona Tortugas. RHP Vicente Campos (1-1, 5.28 ERA) will start for Tampa on Friday night with RHP Jake Paulson (0-2, 9.31 ERA) slated to start for Daytona. First pitch is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
