TAMPA, Fla. - Vicente Campos tossed eight shutout innings for the Tampa Yankees (10-6) in a 4-0 victory over the Daytona Tortugas (5-11) on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Campos (2-1) had not completed eight innings in a single start since August 25th, 2011, as a member of the Everett AquaSox (Seattle Mariners). The right-hander scattered four hits and three walks and struck out five, tallying 100 pitches (66 strikes).
The Yankees gave Campos early run support, scoring three off RHP Jake Paulson in the first inning. Zack Zehner walked and advanced to third on a double by Billy Fleming. Miguel Andujar singled, scoring Zehner. Fleming scored on sacrifice fly by Mark Payton. Andujar crossed the plate on a ground-rule double by Michael O'Neill.
Jake Skole used is speed to score the fourth Tampa run in the second. Skole beat out an infield single and took second on a wild pitch. A flyout to right by Jorge Mateo allowed Skole to tag up to third before scoring on a second wild pitch.
Paulson (0-3) allowed four earned runs on four hits in five innings. The righty struck out two and walked three.
RHP Jose Mesa made his Tampa Yankee debut, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Mesa walked one and did not allow a hit.
Andujar (1-for-3, RBI, R) tallied his 12th RBI of the season.
The series continues on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. with LHP Ian Clarkin (1-1, 2.93 ERA) on the mound for Tampa. RHP Tyler Mahle (1-0, 2.87 ERA) is slated to start for Daytona.
