Rochester Lancers News Release
(Rochester, NY) - The Rochester Lancers today announced that goalkeeper Joey Kapinos was named to the Major Arena Soccer League's Team of the Week.
Kapinos held strong defending the nets in a critical weekend facing top divisional opponents. He earned a thrilling win on Sunday afternoon against the Syracuse Silver Knights, recording six saves and only allowing four goals to an offense averaging nearly seven goals per game. He also recorded 13 saves in Baltimore on Saturday. Kapinos, 25, now holds a 5-3 record on the season as the Lancers inch closer to Syracuse's second place spot in the Eastern Division.
"So many of our players could've been on this list after a tough weekend," said Rich Randall, President of the Lancers. "As all of our players did, Joey played his heart out and came up big for us, especially against Syracuse in front of our fans."
Joey and his twin brother (and teammate) of Ludlow, MA are in their first season with the Lancers and also made history in Baltimore on Saturday night. Seeking a few goals late in the fourth quarter, Head Coach Doug Miller looked to gain an additional field player by using a sixth attacker to take the goalie's position. Miller did what so many other teams have done this year in the MASL and pulled his goalkeeper to be replaced by a field player. The difference in this case... goalkeeper Joey Kapinos was substituted by his twin brother Jayme, marking the first time ever that twins played keeper in the same game of pro indoor soccer.
Also making the league's weekly honors, were Lancers forwards Andrew Hoxie and Joey Tavernese. Hoxie scored two goals against undefeated Baltimore on Saturday, while Tavernese exploded for a four goal weekend, including a hat trick against Syracuse on Sunday. With 16 goals and 9 assists on the season, Tavernese is second in team scoring only to captain Mauricio Salles. Hoxie, who has been on a goal scoring frenzy as of late, has muscled himself into third on the team's scoring ranks with 14 goals, 8 assists. Both are on pace for their best season yet.
The Lancers head south this Saturday to face divisional opponent Harrisburg at 7:05pm. The game can be seen live online at http://golivesportscast.com/your-masl-teams/ or listen live on 93.3 Fickle FM. The next Lancers home game at the War Memorial is on Saturday, February 14 at 1pm as they host the Harrisburg Heat.
