Kansas City Wizards Defender Jose Burciaga Jr. Voted MLS Player of the Month for June

July 5, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (July 5, 2006) - Kansas City Wizards defender Jose Burciaga Jr. notched four goals in five games in June and earned MLS Player of the Month honors while leading the team to a 2-2-1 record during the month. Kansas City is now tied with the Chicago Fire for third place in the Eastern Conference standings, only one point behind second place New England Revolution. This marks the first time Burciaga has been named MLS Player of the Month.

Burciaga leads Kansas City in scoring with five goals, three of them game winners. During June he tallied a goal in each of the four games in which Kansas City scored. Two of Burciaga's June goals came on penalty kicks, the first allowed Kansas City to earn a point in a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls on June 3 and the other in an attempt to inch back from an early deficit in a 3-2 loss to D.C. United on June 28.

Burciaga has played in 77 MLS Regular Season games and four playoff games over his six-year career. After recovering from his second ACL tear in 2003, Burciaga returned to the pitch for the Kansas City Wizards in 2004, playing a vital role in the success of the best defensive unit in MLS. The Wizards defense allowed the fewest goals in the League (30) while posting the most shutouts (12) in 2004. In 2005 Burciaga started in a career high 31 matches, tallying two goals and four assists.

The MLS Player of the Month is selected following the last game of each month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA). The PSRA votes among players nominated by their respective teams.
