Sporting Kansas City News Release

(June 30, 2009) - The Kansas City Wizards begin their quest for the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship Tuesday night with a road match against the Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) at 7:35 p.m. CT at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. Fans outside the Twin Cities can watch the match live at www.USLlive.com or follow along with the action via Kansas City's team blog Hillcrest Road at www.hillcrestroadblog.com.

Kansas City and Minnesota have met once previously in Open Cup play, which resulted in a 3-1 upset win for Minnesota in the 2005 quarterfinals. Minnesota jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two Johnny Menyongar goals and a Wizards own goal from defender Shavar Thomas. The Wizards then pulled one back when Ryan Pore scored in the 71st minute. The Wizards defeated the Thunder 4-0 on March 14 of this year in their final preseason match. The game was played in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Claudio Lopez scored twice in that match, while Jack Jewsbury and Roger Espinoza each added a goal.

Kansas City is 9-9-2 all-time in Open Cup play, including an 0-2 mark in penalty kick shootouts. The Wizards have scored 40 goals while allowing 26. Kansas City won the Open Cup title in 2004. Midfielder Davy Arnaud, defender Jimmy Conrad and midfielder Jack Jewsbury are the only Kansas City players that remain from the championship team. The Wizards are 5-2-1 all-time against USL-1 teams in Open Cup play, including an 0-1 in shootout situations. The shootout loss came last year when then USL-1 Seattle Sounders advanced past the Wizards in the quarterfinals after tying 0-0 through regulation and extra time. Kansas City has scored 19 goals against USL-1 teams in Open Cup play, while surrendering 8.
