
Kannapolis Welcomes Record Crowd to Atrium Health Ballpark in Fourth of July 4-3 Loss

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - With a record 5,391 fans in attendance at Atrium Health Ballpark, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers returned home to start a six-game set with the Carolina Mudcats on July 4, falling 4-3 Monday night.
LHP Brooks Gosswein (L, 2-4) made the start for the Ballers on the bump, tossing five innings of work, picking up an abundance of fours in his stat column. The lefty from Bradley College allowed four runs on four hits, allowing four walks and tallying four strikeouts. RHP Manuel Veloz relieved Gosswein in the sixth, producing a solid Ballers debut with three shutout innings, walking one and striking out three.
Carolina wasted no time in opening the scoring, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning on Gosswein and the Ballers. Jeferson Quero started the fun with an RBI single, scoring Jackson Chourio to make it 1-0, Later in the frame, Jose Sibrian pushed the lead to 4-0 with one swing of the bat, crushing a three-run homer to left field, making it 4-0 in favor of the Mudcats.
Kannapolis fought back for a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but ultimately fell short. Colby Smelley tallied the first hit for Kannapolis as well as the first run with a solo shot to left field, cutting the Carolina lead to 4-1. In the fifth inning, Wes Kath added an RBI single to score Wilber Sanchez to make it 4-2. Finally, in the sixth inning, Victor Torres drew a bases loaded walk to score Smelley, pulling the Ballers ever so close at 4-3.
The Ballers and Mudcats will resume action on Wednesday at Atrium Health Ballpark. The two sides will take Tuesday off from game action and will reconvene for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. LHP Tommy Sommer (3-5, 3.03 ERA) earns the start for Kannapolis, with RHP Jeferson Figueroa (0-4, 5.88 ERA) beginning the night for the Mudcats on the mound.
