Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Despite the solid outings on the mound from Kannapolis Cannon Ballers pitching, the Ballers came up just short on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to the Down East Wood Ducks at Atrium Health Ballpark.
RHP Cristian Mena took the mound for the start of Wednesday night's ballgame looking to change the course on his recent struggles, doing so magnificently. The righty tossed six shutout innings, picking up eight strikeouts along the way. Wednesday ended up as Mena's fourth shutout outing of 2022. LHP Haylen Green relieved Mena in the seventh inning, picking up a shutout outing of his own with two inning and three punchouts.
RHP Emiliano Teodo's start on the bump for Down East was quite literally his best of the season. The righty from Barahona, Dominican Republic tossed five no-hit innings, allowing just one walk and striking out a season-high ten batters. RHP Jose Corniell entered in relief of Teodo in the sixth, continuing the success on the bump for the Wood Ducks with 2.2 shutout innings, walking one and striking out three.
Both sides locked in at a tie for the entirety of the nine-inning game, forcing the Wood Ducks and Cannon Ballers to enter extra innings.
Down East only needed one batter to break the tie, taking a 1-0 lead on a Maximo Acosta RBI single off Ballers RHP Angel Acevedo (L, 0-2) that scored placed-runner Marcus Smith from second base. Three batters later, Yenci Pena added another run on an RBI single to score Acosta.
The Wood Ducks took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the tenth while sending RHP Theo McDowell (W, 3-1) to the mound. After being placed at second base, Logan Glass advanced to third on a passed ball, then to home on a wild pitch by McDowell, cutting the lead to 2-1. Kannapolis sent multiple batters to the plate with baserunners on but failed to string together any further late offense.
Kannapolis will look to rebound from the loss in the third of six matchups with the Down East Wood Ducks on Thursday evening at Atrium Health Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. It is Ladies Night at the ballpark Thursday, with Thirsty Thursday specials planned for the ballgame as well.
Fans can purchase tickets for Thursday's matchup or any other home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
