Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Springfield, IL- It took sixty-five minutes, plus a six-round shootout in Springfield on Friday night, an evening that saw the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings drop their contest to the Springfield Jr. Blues by a score of 3-2.

Five minutes of scoreless hockey was played before Kalamazoo got on the board first with a tally from Anthony Appleyard, his fifth of the season, and his fourth point (2 goals, 2 assists) in the last two games.

With the clock under two minutes in the first, and Kalamazoo shorthanded for the first time of the night, Jacob McDowell poked home his sixth goal of the season and the fifth shorthanded strike of the season for the Jr. K-Wings, to give them a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room after twenty minutes of play.

The second period was highlighted by defense play and big hits from each team. There was no scoring, leaving Kalamazoo with a two-goal lead entering the third and final period.

Halfway through the third period, Springfield would pull to within a goal. Kyle Cook scored his 17th of the season on a tic-tac-toe passing play that led to an open goal on the right side.

With just over six minutes remaining in the third and trailing by one, Jordan Johnson scored his first of the season to force overtime. The trip to overtime was the first point salvaged by the Jr. Blues in their last five games.

The overtime period ended with no scoring, thus leading the game into a five-man shootout.

The five rounds weren't enough, and the game required extras. In the sixth round, Mitch Rogge found the back of the net and broke Springfield's five game losing streak.

The Jr. K-Wings will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West again on Saturday, January 14th against the Michigan Warriors.
