Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- For the second time in as many days, the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings took it to the Port Huron Fighting Falcons. This time, it was a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West. Kalamazoo has yet to drop a contest on their home ice.
It wasn't an ideal start for the Jr. K-wings, as they went down 1-0 just a minute and twenty-nine seconds into the first period. Alex Globke chipped the puck on net from the neutral zone, and it short-hopped past Kalamazoo goalie, Kenneth MacLean. The goal for Globke was his fourth of the season, and his team leading 12th point on the campaign.
Just over ten minutes later, Kalamazoo would pull even. Chad McDonald was set on the point for the Jr. K-Wings first power play opportunity of the afternoon. He got a ton of space at the top of the circles and let a slap shot go that trickled through the legs of Fighting Falcons goalie, Max Milosek. The goal for McDonald was his team-leading ninth goal, and his fourth power play goal on the season, tying him with Robbie Payne for most on the team.
Port Huron would break the 1-1 stalemate at the 12:46 mark. Logan Lemirande (4th) danced through the Kalamazoo defense and released a quick wrister that went over the stick-side of MacLean.
Seven minutes later after going down by a goal, the Jr. K-Wings knotted the game up at two apiece. Taylor Burden was flat on the ice in front of the net, and the loose puck squirted onto the stick of Robbie Payne. Payne blasted it past Milosek for his eighth of the season.
One minute and thirty-nine seconds later, Kalamazoo would take their first lead of the afternoon. Kyle Gattelaro sliced through the Port Huron defense along the right wing side, and slipped the puck through the five-hole of Milosek for his fifth goal of the season.
-MORE- Yet another power play opportunity in the third period resulted in yet another Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings goal. This time it was Drew Graves notching his fourth of the season when the puck ended up on his stick after it was mishandled by Payne in the slot. Graves forced it home and gave Kalamazoo a two-goal lead.
Pulling their goalie in an attempt to create a scoring chance with an extra attacker proved to be costly for the Fighting Falcons. McDonald was on the receiving end of a Jacob McDowell pass and slid the puck casually into the empty net to solidify the Jr. K-Wings victory.
The Jr. K-Wings will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West again on Saturday, October 22nd at 2 p.m. against the Michigan Warriors.
