Traverse City North Stars News Release

TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City North Stars and Michigan Warriors played to a flat-footed draw through three 20-minute periods, a five-minute overtime, and six rounds of the subsequent shootout on Saturday evening at Centre ICE Arena.

It was the seventh round that earned Michigan the extra point in the standings, as the Warriors came away with a 4-3 victory with the final shootout tally.

"It was a good game, a hard-fought game, and we did not lose tonight because we didn't give the effort," said Traverse City head coach Chad Fournier. "We're still young, and we're still learning how to win these kinds of games more consistently. We're only a few weeks older and more experienced than we were a few weeks ago. We played the first-place team in the division to a tie, basically."

The North Stars (5-2-3) levied the first two goals of the game in rapid-fire succession. Zack Dorer (Holt, MI/Des Moines USHL/Ferris State) delivered a blast from the left point at 8:55 of the opening period, and Chris Waterstreet (Northville, MI/TC North Stars NAHL) made it 2-0 just 39 seconds later. Both scores came on the power play.

After the Warriors halved their deficit late in the first, Waterstreet tallied again midway through the second to restore the two-score cushion. Michigan answered a few minutes later, and knotted the affair 6:46 into the third frame. After a scoreless OT session, and six rounds of deadlocked shootout, Michigan's Zak Thompson ended the contest with the game-winning marker - a 3-2 edge in the shootout - and 4-3 final margin on the scoreboard. Jon Farkas (Brighton, MI/Compuware U18) and Kyle Froese (Traverse City, MI/TC Central HS) both recorded savory backhand rooftop pieces in the shootout for the North Stars.

Kyle Laslo (Fenton, MI/Osoyoos KIJHL) returned to the pipes for Traverse City, stopping 23 shots in 26 chances. Jared Van Wormer (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars NAHL) assisted on Dorer's second goal of the season, while Dorer, in turn, set up Waterstreet's first marker along with Froese. Farkas drew the only assist on Waterstreet's encore.

The North Stars welcome former North Division rival Janesville to Centre ICE Arena next weekend for a Friday-Saturday series with the Jets. Both games are scheduled to face-off at 7 p.m.
