Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Game Rewind
Tuesday, April 7th @ Port Huron (Kalamazoo 3-Port Huron 2 SO)
Port Huron, MI- In a possible playoff preview, the Kalamazoo Wings made an impressive statement knocking off the Port Huron Icehawks 3-2 in a shootout at McMorran Place Arena.
Stealing the puck behind the Icehawks net, Trent Daavettila helped give the K-Wings the lead by sending a pass to the slot for Shea Hamilton, who buried his first goal of the season on a one-timer, 7:17 into the opening period.
Keeping true to being the most devastating first period team in the league, Jamie Carroll (27th) tied the game 1-1 at the 18:15 mark for the Icehawks, knocking in a rebound off of a Bryan Smolinski wrist shot.
With the goal from Carroll, the Icehawks have now outscored their opponents this season 102-44 (+57) in the first 20 minutes of play.
Reclaiming the lead in the second stanza, Martin Ondrej placed a left circle snap shot over the shoulder of Ryan Mior 5:11 into the period to give the K-Wings a 2-1 lead.
The goal was Ondrej's third of the season and second since joining Kalamazoo on February 24th. Both of Ondrej's goals with the K-Wings have come at McMorran Place Arena against the Icehawks.
Clamoring near the net late in the period, Smolinski (8th) scored from between the circles with just 14.9 seconds remaining in the second to tie the contest at 2-2.
Neither team was able to score in the third period or in overtime, forcing a decisive shootout.
Port Huron struck first in the shootout receiving a behind the back goal from Nick Lindberg. Kalamazoo wasn't flashy, just effective, getting goals from Glenn Detulleo and the game-winner from Justin Cross in the four-man shootout.
The victory was the K-Wings' third straight and extended their road unbeaten streak to a season-high five games (4-0-1-0).
Earning two points for the win, Kalamazoo moved to within a single point of third place Muskegon, while Port Huron, who earned a point for the shootout loss, is now two points behind the Fort Wayne Komets, who are in first.
Friday, April 10th Vs Fort Wayne (Kalamazoo 4-Fort Wayne 3)
Kalamazoo, MI - The Fort Wayne Komets' league-high 17-game unbeaten streak began March 7th at Wings Stadium, but the Kalamazoo Wings turned their archrivals away 4-3 Friday night, delaying the Komets' clinching of the Huber Trophy for the IHL's best regular season record.
The Komets have enjoyed their share of success at Wings Stadium this season, earning four wins, but the K-Wings stood tall and turned their rivals away on the strength of two goals from rookie Trent Daavettila, including the eventual game decider in the opening minute of the third period.
Fort Wayne surged back with goals from Konstantin Shafranov (27th at 15:14) and Colin Chaulk (8th at 17:05) to raise the tension level in the Stadium, but time would expire before the tenacious Komets could draw even.
The win on the final night of the regular-season home schedule sets up a showdown for third place Saturday night in Muskegon. The Lumberjacks, who won Friday 6-0 over Flint, remain one point ahead of the K-Wings with one game to play.
In addition to their lengthy unbeaten run coming to an end, the Komets also had their 10-game winning streak curtailed. However, they earned the Huber Trophy less than an hour after their setback in Kalamazoo when second-place Port Huron fell in a shootout at Bloomington.
Daavettila racked up his eighth goal in 19 games with the K-Wings at 11:10 of a first period that featured good flow and few stoppages in play. The Howell, Michigan native pounced on a juicy rebound resulting from a Rob Jarvis blueline blast.
Lucas Drake (28th) then electrified the crowd with under two minutes left in the period with a breakaway goal that doubled Kalamazoo's early lead to 2-0. After blocking a Komets shot, Drake scooped up the puck in the neutral zone and steamed in on goalie Nick Boucher, burying a backhander through the five-hole.
Aquafina IHL Rookie of the Year Rick Cleaver extended the lead to three goals by blasting a left-wing slapper through Boucher at 4:47 of the second frame. Jarvis earned the lone assist, his second of the night, on the K-Wings' second power-play tally.
Shafranov (26th) inched the Komets closer at 17:36 when he chopped one in from close range to make it 3-1.
Saturday, April 11th @ Muskegon (Muskegon 5-Kalamazoo 4 SO)
Muskegon, MI - With third place at stake, the Kalamazoo Wings and Muskegon Lumberjacks battled like it was game seven. Despite erasing two-goal deficits twice in the game, the K-Wings dropped the regular season finale 5-4 in a shootout.
As a result of the K-Wings shootout loss, they will now play the Fort Wayne Komets in the Turner Cup Semi-Finals next week.
Wasting no time, Muskegon scored twice in the opening minute of play. On the power-play, Robin Bouchard (42nd) lit the lamp on a spinning wrister from between the circles 50 seconds into the period. Just seven seconds later, Gerome Giudice (2nd) found a loose puck on the ensuing draw and skated in for the breakaway marker.
Dominic Osman answered for the K-Wings for a 5-on-3 goal late in the first, cutting the 'Jacks advantage to 2-1. Osman's goal was his 31st overall and 15th with a man-advantage; both are K-Wings season-highs.
Pouncing on a rebound to the left of the net, Justin Cross registered the equalizer on his 14th tally of the season 5:25 into the second stanza.
Despite being out-shot 12-4 in the second, Muskegon reclaimed the lead nearly five minutes later from Jon Grabarek (7th).
The Lumberjacks matched their largest lead of the contest 2:45 into the third period with a blue line slap shot from Kyle Kos (1st).
Mounting a comeback, Anthony Battaglia (20th) brought the K-Wings back to within a single goal, scoring on a back hander 7:43 into the period.
With a pulled goaltender, Osman (32nd) forced overtime netting his second of the night, tying the contest with just 26.6 second remainings in regulation.
No scoring in the overtime forced a shootout. In the extra session, Muskegon out-dueled Kalamazoo 3-2 to earn the victory and third place.
The shootout loss was the K-Wings' first of the season in 10 attempts.
