K-Wings Trump Aces In Game Three

Kalamazoo, MI- Ryan Nie made 33 saves, Sam Ftorek and Trent Daavettila had two points apiece and the Kalamazoo Wings beat the Alaska Aces 4-1 Wednesday night at Wings Stadium. The loss was the first for the Aces in the Kelly Cup Playoffs as the Final series now stands 2-1 in favor of Alaska.

Back and forth action highlighted a first period that had a total of 33 shots between the two teams. Kalamazoo lit the lamp for the first time on the evening, as Mitch Versteeg one-timed a pass from Justin Taylor over the outstretched catching glove of Alaska goaltender, Gerald Coleman. Versteeg's goal was his first of the playoffs and his first since March 25th (@Trenton).

The Aces couldn't be silenced for the entirety of the first frame, as they capped the period off with a late goal of their own to knot the game up at one. Dan Kissel notched his third of the post-season when he sent a wrist-shot past the shoulder of Ryan Nie from the top of the right circle.

Spending a majority of the early second period in their own zone, the K-Wings regained composure and the lead midway in the stanza. A.J. Thelen's blue line slap shot deflected off of the tape of Andrew Fournier and past Coleman for Fournier's fifth goal of the postseason and the second of the Kelly Cup Finals.

Only 2:05 elapsed off the clock in the third and final period before Kalamazoo gave themselves their biggest lead of the game and the series. Brian McGuirk added to his already stellar performance on the evening as his slap shot beat Coleman for his third of the playoffs.

The K-Wings closed the door on any potential Aces comeback, as Ftorek added an empty netter with 1:16 remaining in the game. The goal was the seventh for Ftorek and it extended his immense lead in points for defensemen in the Kelly Cup Playoffs with 19.

The K-Wings will remain at Wings Stadium for game four of the Kelly Cup Finals this Friday, May 20th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Aces. Game Four will be the last Frugal Fan Friday, featuring $1 beer and $1 hot dogs, of the season.
