Brevard County Manatees News Release
VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees managed just four hits and the Jupiter Hammerheads scored four runs in the first inning as the Manatees were defeated 6-1 by the Hammerheads on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.
The trouble for the 'Tees (21-18 second half, 50-57 overall)started right away as Brevard starting pitcher Brandon Williamson (2-9, 6.62) led the game off by walking Noah Perio. Back-to-back singles by Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich, with Yelich's hit driving in Perio, gave Jupiter (18-19, 54-53) a 1-0 lead with runners on first and second and no outs.
Williamson induced an infield pop out off the bat of Mark Canha, but then Aaron Dudley would drive in Ozuna with a single and advance to second on the throw as the Manatees were now down 2-0. Jupiter would drive in two more runs thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jacob Realmuto and a double by Ryan Fisher as the Hammerheads took a 4-0 lead before Brevard could even step in the batter's box.
Jupiter's 4-0 lead was plenty as their pitching staff mowed down the Manatees, starting with 2011 first round pick Jose Fernandez. Fernandez allowed just two hits and walked three in five innings of work, while fanning eight Brevard County hitters.
After his rough first inning, Williamson was able to settle down and retire Jupiter in order for the next three innings, but the damage was already done. Williamson went 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out two.
The Hammerheads added two more runs in the eighth off of Tommy Toledo before the 'Tees finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a RBI ground out by Cody Hawn that scored Mike Walker.
Offensively, Brevard struck out a season-high 14 times, left runners in scoring position with two outs five times and went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position overall.
The 'Tees will look to get back on track on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. as they continue their four-game series with Jupiter.
2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann (8-6, 4.02) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. In ten home starts this season, the former Texas Longhorn is 5-1 with a 2.44 ERA.
The Hammerheads will counter with southpaw Chad James (5-6, 4.53). James has been solid on the road this season as he has compiled a 2.90 ERA in six road starts.
