Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DAYTONA, Fla. (July 31, 2012) - The Daytona Cubs bullpen stranded four Miracle base runners in the final three innings to hold on for a 5-4 win at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Tuesday night in game two of a four game series.
Trailing 5-2 going into the sixth, the Miracle were able to cut the Cubs lead down to one run. With one out, Levi Michael doubled into left field off Daytona starter Austin Kirk and Steve Liddle followed with a walk.
Kyle Knudson then hit a two hopper that was booted by the shortstop Tim Saunders allowing Michael to cross home plate to slice into the Daytona lead, 5-3. The next hitter, Josmil Pinto, worked the count full before yanking a fastball from Kirk (6-3) through the left side for a RBI and bringing Fort Myers to a one run deficit.
After Kirk worked five innings, the Daytona bullpen took over with Hunter Cervanka, Jeff Lorick and A.J. Morris combining to shut down the Fort Myers offense over the final four innings despite allowing seven Miracle players to reach base.
Fort Myers took the early lead on a solo homerun from Danny Rams, his fourth of the season, in the second inning. Liddle delivered a two-out RBI single in the third to push the Miracle advantage to 2-0.
The Daytona Cubs then tied the game in the third off Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen. John Andreoli led off the inning with a triple and scored when the next batter, Roni Torreyes, doubled into left field.
After Rubi Silva reached on a bunt single, Rebel Ridling hit into a 4-6-3 double play that allowed Torreyes to score from third and tie the game 2-2.
Stuifbergen (4-4) then allowed the first four hitters of the fourth inning to reach base beginning with Matt Cerda's single into center. After a walk to Taylor Davis, Tim Saunders doubled into right field, kicking up chalk on the foul line, and scored Cerda for a Cubs' 3-2 lead.
Andreoli followed with a run-scoring base hit and Torreyes added his second RBI of the night on a groundout.
Michael finished the night 3-for-5 and Andy Leer walked four times, scoring a run, while not registering an at-bat.
Fort Myers (47-60, 19-21) return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Wednesday night for the third of a four game series against the Daytona Cubs (48-59, 18-21) at 7:05 p.m. Madison Boer (4-9) will start for the Miracle against Robert Whitenack (1-5).
