Montreal Juniors News Release

Montreal - The Montreal Juniors narrowly fell to the Gatineau Olympiques on Friday night as they dropped game 5 by a 3-2 score at the Verdun Auditorium. After sweeping both games in Gatineau this week, the Juniors are poised to close out the best-of-seven battle when the series shifts back to Gatineau tomorrow night, with the Juniors still holding a 3-2 series lead.

The evening did not start off as planned for Montreal as a bad bounce in the Juniors zone immediately gravitated to Gatineaus Denis Kindl, allowing him to tap a bouncing back past Jean-Francois Bérubé to open the scoring just under two minutes into the game. Despite having the early momentum, the Juniors fought back and put a consistent stream of pressure on the Olympiques Maxime Clermont, however, they still did not manage to crack the scoreboard as Gatineau maintained a 1-0 lead after the first. An early power play opportunity for the Olympiques in the second echoed the start of the first as Christian Ouellet gave Gatineau a 2-0 lead early on. However, Montreal was quick to strike back as less than 90 seconds later; Matthew Brenton knocked a loose puck under Maxime Clermont to cut the deficit to one goal. With the momentum shifting towards the home team, the Juniors continued to press and with just under seven minutes left, Brenton notched his second of the game by redirecting a David Stitch slap shot to tie the score. Montreal's lead did not last long though as Gatineau's Joshua Domingues responded 1:23 seconds later to re-take the lead.

The final period followed the course of the entire game, providing an entertaining struggle between two tough clubs which continued until the final minutes. Despite a flurry of shots and chances as time expired, the Juniors could not score the equalizing goal as they fell 3-2 at home.

Juniors goalie Jean-Francois Brub stopped 20/23 shots in the loss, while the Olympiques Maxime Clermont finished 30/32 in the win.

Game 6 is schedule for tomorrow night in Gatineau, and if necessary, game 7 will be played at the Verdun Auditorium on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:35
