Montreal Juniors News Release
Montreal, February 17th, 2009 - Montreal played host to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens at the Verdun Auditorium on Wednesday night, but courtesy of stellar defence and goaltending, the Juniors walked away with a 6-2 victory.
The Juniors got off to a quick start as Loik Poudrier gave his team the lead at 2:09. Mimicking the way Montreal started the period, Trevor Parkes gave his team a 2-0 lead by scoring his 23rd goal of the season at 18:27. Not content to go into the intermission without cracking the scoresheet, Chicoutimi's Mathieu Girard responded 19 seconds later to cut the score in half at the break.
Chicoutimi got off to a rocky start in the second period as they were assessed a bench minor before the puck even dropped. Montreal failed to capitalize on the ensuing power play, however, rookie Trevor Parkes proved he truly belongs in the QMJHL by scoring second goal of the game and 24th of the year. Matthew Brenton also got in on the action as with only 17 seconds left in the period, he beat Chicoutimi's Robin Gusse to give Montreal a 4-1 lead at intermission.
The strong defense and clutch goaltending that kept the Sagueneens off the board in the second period continued in the third as Jean-Francois Bérubé continued his stellar play, while the Juniors' penalty kill chipped in by keeping Chicoutimi off the scoreboard on all four chances. The only defensive lapse came as the game was in its final stages as the Sagueneens managed to add a score, but Montreal quickly answered back as both Loik Poudrier and Matthew Brenton scored their second goals of the game to seal the 6-2 win.
Juniors' goalie Jean-Francois Bérubé stopped 25/27 shots in the win, while the Sagueneenes' Robin Gusse finished 30/36 in the loss. Montreal's record improved to 26-25-2-3 while Chicoutimi's dropped to 22-27-4-4.
The Victoriaville Tigers face-off against Montreal on Friday night at 7:35 in Verdun, while the Juniors close out their home stand against the Gatineau Olympiques on Sunday, February 21, at 4:05 p.m. They will then take the road again to face-off the Lewiston MAINEiacs on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7h00.
