Cleveland Barons News Release


The Cleveland Jr. Barons of the North American Hockey League opened the 2006 portion of their schedule, in the same way they closed out 2005, with a pair of victories, this time against the Alpena IceDiggers. The Barons are now 21-12-4, 46 pts, which is good for first place in the NAHL North Division

WEEKEND REVIEW

Cleveland 7- Alpena 3

The Barons returned to the Lakefront Line Arena ice, after its annual holiday break. The Barons would jump out to a 3-2 lead after the first period, on goals by Nick Kosinski (Marquette, MI), Adam Snead (Sylvania, OH) and Chris Reed (Solon, OH). In the second period Cleveland would increase its 6-2 on goals by Carter Camper (Rocky River, OH), Tomas Petruska (Presov, Slovakia) and Josh Leonard. Alpena forward Drew Pierson scored at the end of the period to make it 6-3. In the third period, Tomas Petruska would get his second goal of the game to make the final score 7-3. Barons Goaltender Bobby Jarosz (Crystal Lake, IL) earned his 12 win of the season by making 18 saves in the match. The Barons were led by it s top line of Carter Camper (1g-4a), Tomas Petruska (2g-2a) and Josh Leonard (1g-3a). Defenseman Adam Snead contributed with 2 assists, while John Kennedy (Saginaw, MI)and Joe Greener (Basingstoke, England)had an assist in the contest.

Cleveland 5- Alpena 2

The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Joe Greener's 5th goal of the year, with Jeremy Tejchma (Muskegon,MI) and Chris Reed picking up the assists. The IceDiggers forward Drew Pierson would score to make the score 1-1 after the first period. In the second period, the Barons would score the lone goal, Cleveland forward carter Camper would score his 22nd goal of the year with Josh Leonard and Pat Goebel (Parma,OH) with the assists, to make the 2-1 after two periods. In the third period, the Barons would close the game out with three goals in the period. Joe Greener would scored his second goal of the game and 6th of the year, with Ryan Ward (Saline, MI) and Trent Bonnett (Butler, PA) with the assists. Barons defenseman Ricky Akkerman would the score 4-2 with his second goal of the year, on the power play with Tomas Petruska and Clark MacLean (Worthington, OH) with the assists. The IceDiggers would make it 4-3 late in the third period on a Drew Pierson goal. Barons forward Joe Greener would complete the hat trick with his seventh goal of the year to make the final 5-3. Barons goalie Kenny Reiter (Pittsburgh, PA) made 26 saves for the victory.

UPCOMING GAMES

The Barons will face off against their in-state rivals, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms (19-9-3,41pts third place NAHL North Division). The Barons will travel to the IceZone in Boardman, OH on Friday, January 13th, and Monday January 16th both game times are 7:00PM, while the Phantoms will travel to the Lakefront Lines Arena for a game on Saturday, January 14th game time 7:30 PM. Barons Head Coach/ General Manager John Fritsche had this to say about the upcoming series: "Mahoning Valley will provide a great test for us this weekend. The Phantoms have a very good squad and we will have to play to the best of our ability to achieve our team goals this weekend."

ALUMNI UPDATE

The Barons would like to congratulate Matt Davis (Rocky River, OH, Miami University) on being named CCHA player of the week. Davis had 4goals and 1 assist in a 6-3 victory over Northern Michigan. Defenseman Peter Harrold (Kirtland Hills, OH, Boston College) had a 4 point weekend with a goal and 3 assists in victories over Northeastern and Providence.
