Tornado Back on Top With Sweep of Bandits

With two wins on the road this weekend against Texarkana, the Texas Tornado moved back into first place in the NAHL South Division. On Friday night, Tornado assistant captain #28 Karl Sellan scored the last two goals, both on the power play to give the Tornado a much needed 5-4 overtime win over the Texarkana Bandits. The game was overshadowed by the absence of two key players. Tornado defenseman #6 Devrin Stonehouse, who earned NAHL Player of the Week honors the last time the Tornado played in December, was trying to get back into the United States from his home in Manitoba, and Bandits goaltender Riley Gill is awaiting the start of college in order to maintain his NCAA eligibility. The Tornado struck first after a good start to the game as #17 Jordan Mowbray hammered home a rebound effort as linemate #7 Nielsson Arcibal originally tried to stuff the puck in on the side. The Bandits tied the score on their first power play of the game. With #8 Dylan Cooper in the box for elbowing, Bandits forward Pat Maroon tucked home a backdoor pass over sprawled goaltender #33 Troy Redmann. The Tornado would outshoot the Bandits 14-7 in the 1st period. The 2nd period again saw the Tornado come out with some fire. A nice forechecking play by Cooper allowed the puck to squirt out front and a streaking #24 Billy Skwarczewski put the puck past Bandits goaltender Miles Williams through the 5-hole for a 2-1 lead. However, the Bandits answered right back with a goal from the point from Jason Price. #19 Andrew Harrison gave the Tornado a 3-2 lead on a wrap-around goal with an assist to #22 Brian Reagan. The 3rd period began with Bandits momentum that ultimately culminated in a goal from Pat Knowlton that tied the score at 3-3. Knowlton banged home a rebound after an initial shot from Ryan Blair. The Tornado would then take a 4-3 lead on the power play, as Sellan was fed a nice pass from Harrison and put it upstairs on Williams for his 21st goal of the year with 4:23 left. However, just like they had the past three goals, the Tornado could not manage to hold the lead. With :10 remaining the Bandits won a face-off in the Tornado end, got it to the point, and Graham Sisson tipped home a drive with :05 seconds remaining to tie the score at 4-4 and head into overtime. Both teams had chances in overtime until Tornado defenseman #12 Colin Long was hit with a high stick from Anthony Becker and the Tornado went on a 4 on 3 power play. It didn't take Sellan long to win it for Texas, as he skated in from the point and hammered a 25-foot slapshot past Williams for a 5-4 Tornado win.

Saturday night, in a defensive battle, the Texas Tornado used more special teams magic to defeat the Texarkana Bandits, 2-1 at the Four States Entertainment Center in Texarkana and regain the lead atop of the NAHL South Division. The Tornado rode the hot goaltending all night of #33 Troy Redmann, who turned away countless shots. The Tornado scored first when #26 Derek Danowski raced in on a breakaway and slid one underneath Bandits goaltender Miles Williams for a 1-0 lead. #18 Tom Train and #28 Karl Sellan assisted on the play. The second period was more Redmann, and the Tornado went up 2-0 as shorthanded specialist #17 Jordan Mowbray raced in on a shorthanded breakaway and put on past Williams on the right side. The goal was unassisted. The 3rd period, the Tornado played defensive hockey with more outstanding saves from Redmann. Sellan hit the post about halfway through the period, and Texarkana finally broke though as Aaron Lewicki put home a rebound for a 2-1 game. The last three minutes of the game was all Bandits, as Tornado defenseman #12 Colin Long received a double minor for high-sticking and the Bandits were on the power play to end the game. However, more great goaltending and good defense kept the Bandits out and secured the 2-1 win.
