Cincinnati Jungle Kats News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Jungle Kats (1-7) were unable to stifle the af2's 10th most efficient passer, Mitch Tanney, as the Alabama Steeldogs (5-3) picked up their first road victory of the season, a 65-33 win on Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena. The aforementioned quarterback completed 29 of 36 passes for 278 yards and 6 TD's while Kats QB Aaron Marshall finished 22-for-44 passing, 248 yards and 3 TD's in a losing effort.
The Kats had a golden opportunity to score right out of the gate, as they recovered the botched opening kickoff at the Alabama 11-yard line. Unfortunately, though, Cincinnati failed to score and relinquished the great scoring change as the Steeldogs took over possession at their own 2-yard line. Alabama drove the length of the field to dent the scoreboard first, as Bradly Chavez caught a 22-yard TD pass from Alabama QB Mitch Tanney, making it 6-0 after the missed extra point.
Cincinnati once again drove inside the Alabama 10-yard line, but was once again unable to tally as Chico Cleveland intercepted an Aaron Marshall pass, returning it to the Kats 10-yard line. Despite great field position, Tanney tossed his first interception of the game, as LeJuan Edwards snagged a tipped pass in the endzone then returned it the length of the field. With Jesse Obert's extra point, the Kats took their first lead of the game, 7-6.
The back and forth scoring continued as Alabama stormed down the field again, reclaiming a 13-7 lead when Tanney hooked up with Markeith Cooper for the 23-yard TD strike. The Steeldogs added to their 6-point lead early in the second frame, as Tanney led his team 37 yards down field for the score, capped off by a 3-yard TD run by Deon DeBoise. Cincinnati climbed within 7 points as Kats kicker Jesse Obert booted a pair of field goals, one from 23 yards and other from 34 yards away to make it 20-13 Alabama at the break.
Any momentum the Kats carried into the locker room was quickly spoiled early in the 3rd quarter; the Steeldogs took possession of the football and drove down the field to extend their lead to 27-13 when Bradly Chavez grabbed his second TD of the game, a short 2 yard snag. He didn't waste much time hauling in TD number 3 as he corralled a 31-yard toss from Tanney just a few minutes later, making it 34-13 Alabama.
Despite a James Lewis 27-yard TD grab, which made it 34-20 Alabama, the Steeldogs were not fazed. After retaining possession, the visitors rumbled down field and put up another touchdown, another short hook pass to Markeith Cooper for the score. With another large lead, the Steeldogs began to run up the score. They added another 24 points in the fourth quarter, while the Kats could only muster 13 points to complete the 65-33 final score.
The Kats play back-to-back home games for just the second time this season, as they will welcome the Mahoning Valley Thunder to U.S. Bank Arena next Saturday, June 2nd , at 7:30pm. It will also be the first time in 2007 that the Kats face a foe they have seen in a previous week. Fans can hear all the action of next Saturday's game on 1530 HOMER - The Sports Animal beginning at 7:15pm.
