LOSING STREAK SNAPPED - The Portland Sea Dogs snapped their seven-game losing streak last night with a 6-1 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils. The Sea Dogs put up the first run of the game in the top of the third inning against Fightin Phils starter James McArthur. Tyler Esplin singled, Wil Dalton was hit by a pitch, and Nick Sogard walked to load the bases. One out later, Rafaela lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Esplin and giving Portland a 1-0 lead. Portland had the offense rolling again in the top of the fifth with McArthur still on the mound. With two outs, David Hamilton reached on an error by Reading's first baseman Josh Ockimey. With Hamilton on first, Rafaela blasted his third homer of the season, expanding the lead to 3-0. Pedro Castellanos made it back-to- back homers with a solo shot, increasing the Sea Dogs advantage to 4-0 Two more runs came in to score for the Sea Dogs in the top of the seventh inning, still against McArthur. Hamilton led off the inning with a walk. Rafaela brought Hamilton home with his second long ball of the night, tying his career-high for home runs in a game with two, and packed on to the lead 6-0. Reading fought back in the bottom of the ninth against Portland reliever Oddanier Mosqueda. Jhailyn Ortiz homered on the first pitch of the inning, bringing the score to 6-1.
RAFAELA HAS A NIGHT - Portland outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela had a career-night last night for the Sea Dogs. He tied a career-high with two home runs while driving home a career-high five runs. Rafaela was responsible for five of the six runs by Portland last night. He also had a diving catch in the outfield and collided with the outfield wall for another catch in centerfield.
JAY GROOME DAZZLES - Jay Groome had one of his best starts of the year last night for the Sea Dogs. Groome pitched 7.0 shutout innings allowing just two hits while walking four and striking out five. In the month of June, Groome is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts, throwing 17.0 innings allowing just three runs on nine hits while walking 12 and striking out 13. He has given up just one homer this month.
GRANBERG GETS THE CALL - Prior to tonight's game, outfielder Devlin Granberg has been promoted to Triple-A Worcester. Granberg was one of the best hitters for the Sea Dogs, he is batting .304 in 40 games with 11 doubles, four triples, one home run and 10 RBI. Granberg also had one of the best OBP in the Eastern League with .427. In a corresponding move, infielder Ricardo Cubillan has been sent to Portland from High-A Greenville and outfielder Tyler Esplin rejoins A+ Greenville.
CASTELLANOS CONTINUES TO HIT - Pedro Castellanos extended his hitting streak to 12 games last night and his on-base streak to 17 games with his home run in the fifth inning. His hitting streak is tied for the longest, active streak in Double-A. During his 12 games, Castellanos is hitting .347 with five doubles, seven RBI, and seven runs.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - June 16, 2001: In his Double-A debut, Josh Beckett allows 1 hit in 4 shutout innings. Beckett fanned 8 of the first 9 batters he faced, allowing only a hit by pitch in his first turn through the New Britain lineup. The Rock Cats scored 4 runs in the late innings off the Portland bullpen and rallied for a 4-1 win.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brian Van Belle will make his Double-A debut tonight for the Sea Dogs. He started the season with High-A Greenville Drive. In nine starts (12 appearances), he was 3-2 with 6.14 ERA. Van Belle has tossed 58.2 innings allowing 43 runs (40 earned) on 83 hits while walking eight and striking out 55. Opponents are batting .331 against him.
