Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BOWIE, MD - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (22-38) raced to a 5-1 lead, but the Bowie Baysox scored six unanswered runs and held off the Ponies 7-6 on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium. Bowie (24-36) has taken three of the first four games in the series. New York Mets Catcher James McCann was 0-4 in his MLB rehab start with Binghamton.
The Ponies got on the board early with a solo homer from Francisco Alvarez in the first inning, his 14th of the year and 36th RBI. Alvarez now has a 13-game on-base streak. Quinn Brodey belted an RBI double to left center and Zach Ashford hit a sacrifice fly in the second to put the Ponies up 3-1. In the third, Carlos Cortes hit a two out, two-run homer to make it 5-1. It was Cortes second two-run homer in as many days.
Bowie would then score two runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. An RBI fielder's choice from Greg Cullen made it 7-5 in the sixth. Binghamton pulled within one in the eighth on an RBI single by Jeremy Vasquez. Shelton Perkins retired the Rumble Ponies in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.
Ponies RHP Jesus Vargas (0-4) took the loss allowing nine hits and six runs over three plus innings. Bowie starter Ryan Watson (4-1) earned the win allowing five runs on six hits over five innings.
The two teams continue their series on Friday night with first pitch at 7:05 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
