Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Flint, MI - The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings and the Michigan Warriors have played six times this season; Kalamazoo has left each game as the victor. The most recent win for Kalamazoo came on Friday night, when they traveled to Flint and defeated Michigan on their home ice by the score of 3-0. Kalamazoo had one goal in every period to complement outstanding goaltending by Marcus Due-Boje, who recorded 46 saves in the shutout.
The Jr. K-Wings wasted no time getting on the board. At the 9:04 mark in the first, on the first power play opportunity of the game, the Jr. K-Wings were able to take a 1-0 lead. Matt Wurst fired a shot from the top of the point that Danny Hamburg (12th) was able to tip it in from the slot.
Kalamazoo continued to be on a roll in the second period. Less than five minutes in, Lucas Kohls (3rd) put a backhander into the back of the net. Kohls and Nick Kovalchik were able to pass the puck back and forth in the slot, allowing Kohls to have no defenders in between him and the Michigan goal.
The third period saw the Jr. K-Wings continue their steady march to victory. Mac McDonnell (2nd) extended the Jr. K-Wings lead to 3-0 at 6:11 when he got behind the Warriors' defensemen at the blue line and had a clear path for the score. McDonnell received the pass from Kovalchik, who recorded his second assist of the evening.
Kalamazoo's third goal would prove to be the final score of the night, as they went on to defeat Michigan by the score of 3-0. Kalamazoo has now won eight of their last nine, and has a nine game point streak.
