Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â The Bakersfield Condors have announced the return of the Jr. Condors Hockey League instructional program for 2003. It is the fifth season the Condors have committed to instructing local youth through the program.
Condors Associate Coach Marty Raymond will run the Jr. Condors this season, providing instruction to boys and girls aged 5-13. He will be on the ice with the children, running drills and teaching proper technique in the areas of skating, shooting and puck control. The JCHL is the only program of its kind in all of Kern County.
The JCHL will include eight one-hour sessions on the ice, running from mid-September until mid-November. The cost is just $200, with discounts included for goaltenders, and multi-family member discounts. With the opening of the new Bakersfield Ice Center due in mid-November, the Condors have abbreviated the Jr. Condors program. It will lead up to the opening of the rink and the anticipated formation of several youth leagues.
"This is a perfect precursor to the start of hockey season at the new rink," said Raymond. "We want to give the kids the instruction they need at a young age to learn how to play this game. Whether they are just picking up the sport, or looking to improve upon their skill, this is the perfect environment to do it.

Ice Painting Tradition Continues
It has become a ritual signaling the start of hockey season. The bare concrete floor of Centennial Garden is flooded every fall and frozen to form the battlefield for the Condors for the next seven months. But it doesn't happen on its own.
The Condors invite fans to come down to Centennial Garden to help paint the logos into the ice during the week of September 15th. Initially, a thin layer of ice is laid down, then the Condors team and sponsor logos are added, after which, another layer of ice will be put down on top. It will first be used for the Los Angeles Kings preseason match against the San Jose Sharks on September 21st. Condors Training Camp 2003 opens on Saturday, October 4th.
"I think everyone that came out last year and pitched-in had fun," said Condors GM Chris Freshour. "It's a fun, behind-the-scenes event that really makes you feel like the season is right upon us." Any interested fans should contact Chris Freshour at 324-PUCK (7825).
Condors droppings: The Condors monthly online auction to benefit the Kern Chapter of the American Red Cross features the 02-03 game worn green lace-up jerseys. Five new jerseys are up for bid, including Paul Rosebush, Nate Anderson, Jordan Roach, Danielle Dube and Ken Baker... The much awaited book by Ken Baker documenting his 2001-02 season with the Condors, "They Don't Play Hockey In Heaven," is now available for pre-order on the Condors website.
