Mighty Ducks of Anaheim To Hold Portion of Training Camp in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced today that the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim will hold a portion of their preseason training camp at the Sports Arena. The two clubs are also working towards an agreement that would name the Gulls as the Mighty Ducks ECHL affiliate for the 2003-04 season.
The Mighty Ducks preseason training camp in San Diego is set to take place Sept. 23 - 25. Ice time for those dates is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon and will be open to the public.
"We are excited about spending part of our training camp in San Diego. In building a relationship with the Gulls, we look forward to increasing the popularity of hockey throughout Southern California," said Chuck Fletcher, director of hockey operations for the Mighty Ducks.
"This is great news for our organization," Gulls President Ron Hahn said. "We're extremely excited about having the Mighty Ducks, a top NHL organization, train in San Diego. In addition we are eagerly anticipating working with the Ducks as their ECHL affiliate. This is not only huge news for the Gulls organization but hockey in general within the San Diego community. Our fans will be able to get a taste of NHL talent, which should bring a lot more energy to the Sports Arena."
Anaheim's primary AHL affiliation is with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. With an affiliation however, the Gulls will have the opportunity to hold players in Anaheim's system on their roster.
Said Gulls General Manager and head coach Steve Martinson, "Because of our affiliation with the AHL Hershey Bears last season, we were already bringing higher caliber players to San Diego. We are really looking forward to working with an NHL team and their AHL affiliate, as it will contribute immensely to our recruiting process. "
The Gulls will open their training camp in early October (dates still to be determined). San Diego begins its 2003-04 campaign Saturday, Oct. 18 in Bakersfield. The Home Opener is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1 against the Idaho Steelheads.
