The Springfield Jr. Blues beat the North Iowa Outlaws 2-1 in the first game of the weekend series at the Springfield Nelson Center.

Veteran Jon Gaffney scored the winning goal at 14:36 of the third period, with assists from Trent Frey and Jack Callahan. Springfield Goaltender C.J. Groh shut the Outlaws out the rest of the game and had several key stops to keep the Jr. Blues in the game.

N. Iowa outshot the Blues 37-32.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, Springfield's Matt Globke scored in the second period to even the score at 1-1. A Justin Hochsprung shot produced a rebound that Globke roofed into the top of the N. Iowa net. Defenseman Brad Denney also assisted on the play.

"It was a good win for us at home", said coach Ch! ris Wyler. " We need to keep building on this night after night", he added.

The win was Springfield's second straight. The team beat the league leading St. Louis Bandits last Sunday 3-2.

N.Iowa is in second place in the Central Division. Springfield fans were glad to see a win at the Nelson Center and with two big wins over the league's top teams, they have plenty to be excited about.

The two teams battle again tonight at the Nelson Center. Game time is 7:30pm.
