Traverse City North Stars News Release
MARQUETTE - For the second consecutive evening, the Traverse City North Stars and Marquette Rangers needed more than 60 minutes of hockey to settle things. But unlike Friday's affair, the Rangers only required 18 seconds of extra time to skate away with an overtime victory against the NAHL North Division leaders, claiming a 2-1 win and a weekend sweep of the Stars.
Traverse City's offense could generate just a Josh Miller goal - an even-strength marker at 9:28 of the second period - 2:02 after the hosts jumped out to a 1-0 lead. It was the second goal in as many nights for Miller (Trenton, MI/Trenton HS), who was set up by Dan Radke (Orinda, CA/Soo Indians AAA). After a scoreless third stanza, James Gallagher converted a turnover deep in the Traverse City zone into an extra point for the Rangers, who improved to 8-10-3 and pulled to within nine points of the Stars in the standings. Second- place Mahoning Valley also won - 3-1 over St. Louis - and closed the gap to four points.
Brandon Stephenson (Saline, MI/TC North Stars) stopped 28 of 30 shots for the North Stars, who fell to 13-3-2 after claiming two of the four points on the table this weekend. The Rangers also took a 6-4 lead in the SmithBarney Challenge Cup with eight meetings remaining.
TC gets next weekend off before a three-game stint in Youngstown, Oh. for the NAHL North Showcase, set for Nov. 28-30. The Stars will face host Mahoning Valley, Alpena, and defending NAHL champs St. Louis at that event.
