Jr. Blues Visit for Busy Weekend at McMorran Arena

February 13, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Fighting Falcons, proud members of the North American Hockey League, return to McMorran Arena for a weekend series against the Springfield Jr. Blues Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. The team will hold fundraisers for the family of fallen goalie coach Scott Nichols throughout the weekend, and host Detroit Red Wings legend Tomas Holmstrom for an autograph session Saturday night.

The Fighting Falcons (24-12-8, 56 points) have held the top spot in the North Division standings since opening night, but have seen their lead shrink to just two points over the surging Michigan Warriors. The Jr. Blues (20-19-6, 46 points) currently find themselves outside the playoff picture, but all six teams in the ultra-competitive North Division are still in contention for a Robertson Cup run.

This will be the second and final trip to Port Huron of the regular season for Springfield, who last visited McMorran Arena over two months ago. Each team has won two of the four games played in the season series so far, and will be looking to bounce back from matching three-game losing streaks.

In the first matchup between these teams, Port Huron overcame a four-goal deficit for a 6-5 shootout win on November 30. That game was listed as the most exciting win in franchise history by many fans who participated in a contest to celebrate the team's 100th win in January.

Fighting Falcons captain Bryan Yim leads the way with six points on three goals and three assists in four games against Springfield this season, while the Jr. Blues have five players tied with three points against Port Huron.

Port Huron's ten-point lead over fifth-place Springfield is the smallest point differential between teams in those positions in the NAHL. The 14-point difference between first and last place in the North Division is less than half of the average of 31 points between the top and bottom teams in the other three divisions.

Instead of holding a Jackpot Friday drawing Friday night, the team will donate $1 per person in attendance to the Nichols family. The team will also hold a silent auction for great prizes from the team as well as area businesses throughout the weekend, with all proceeds benefiting the family. Bidders should keep in mind that only cash or checks can be accepted for the auction. Proceeds from every 50/50 drawing throughout the rest of the season will go to the family as well.

The Fighting Falcons will bring in 4-time Stanley Cup champion Tomas Holmstrom to sign autographs from 6-8 p.m. during Saturday's game. A cocktail party for season ticket holders and sponsors will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. To R.S.V.P. for the cocktail party, call the front office at (810) 966-3800. All five VIP suites for Saturday's game are sold out.

Sponsors like Freighters Restaurant, SEMCO, Reasonable Roofing and Precision Printing have made Holmstrom's Saturday night visit possible. The support of these businesses has allowed the Fighting Falcons to host the Detroit Red Wings legend, and the team hopes to be able to be able to continue to bring exciting promotions to downtown Port Huron, based on the success of events like this one.

Tickets to any Fighting Falcons home game are available at the McMorran Arena Box Office, starting at just $7 for seniors, students and military. For more information, call the team's front office at (810) 966-3800.
