SAN DIEGO - A press conference has been announced for 4:15 PM that will feature former American League MVP Jose Canseco for Friday, July 28th before the Surf Dawgs take on the Long Beach Armada at 7:05 PM. Canseco is returning as a member of the Long Beach Armada to play his first game in San Diego since he demanded a trade from the team on July 4 after playing one game with the team. This weekend will mark his only appearance in San Diego at Tony Gwynn Stadium, located on the campus of San Diego State University. The two teams will conclude the series with games Saturday July 29 at 6:05 PM and Sunday July 30 at 5:05 PM.
Canseco, 42, has had a spectacular professional baseball career. During the course of his seventeen big league seasons, he was named Rookie of the Year and American League MVP, was selected as a member of six All-Star teams, and played in four World Series -- winning championships with the 1989 Oakland Athletics and 2000 New York Yankees.
Canseco made his Golden Baseball League debut on July 3rd as a member of the San Diego Surf Dawgs. He went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts as the team's designated hitter. After the game, Canseco demanded a trade in order to play closer to his Los Angeles-area home. The Surf Dawgs accommodated his request, trading him to Long Beach for Cuban pitching phenom Yoankis Turino. Since joining the Armada, Canseco has batted .280 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs in 8 games. He also won the Golden Baseball League's inaugural Home Run Derby, edging current Surf Dawg Scott Goodman 5-4 in the final round. Later that same evening, Canseco made his first pitching appearance as a member of the Golden Baseball League and gave up four runs in 1/3 of an inning.
The Surf Dawgs are currently in first place in the Golden Baseball League's second-half standings with a 6-3 record. Turino has played a significant role in the team's recent surge with a 2.35 ERA in 4 appearances for the Surf Dawgs.
