San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - It was a tale of two games at Foster Field on Saturday as Dilla first baseman Daryl Jones' solo homerun in the 12th inning was the difference in a 10-9 Amarillo win. The homerun was Jones' second of the game, and season, as the Dillas snapped a three-game losing streak to the Colts.
The game started as a slugfest as Amarillo plated three runs in the top of the first off of Colts starter Brian Henschel thanks to a San Angelo fielding error, an RBI single by third baseman Carlos Figueroa, and an RBI groundout by first baseman Daryl Jones.
The Colts retaliated by scoring a run in the first on an RBI single by second baseman Mark Ramos. They scored twice more in the second on a two run single by centerfielder Ronnie Gaines, which scored catcher Trey Carter and third baseman Mike Pettibone on a tremendous slide at the plate.
Amarillo came back with two runs in the third on an RBI double by Jones and an RBI groundout by designated hitter Stephen Douglas to give the Dillas a 5-3 lead. The Colts followed with four runs in the bottom half on a Dilla throwing error and a three-run homer by Carter, his fourth of the year and third against Amarillo, as the Colts took a 7-5 lead.
San Angelo would plate another run in the fourth on a solo homer by rightfielder Adam Hale (3), which gave the Colts a three-run lead. But the Dillas came back in the fifth due to a titanic three-run shot by Jones (1) over the clubhouses in leftfield to knot the game up at eight.
The Dillas would garner the lead in the sixth on an RBI double by leftfielder TJ Warren before the Colts responded with an RBI double from designated hitter Jason Landreth to tie the score at nine. That ended the first game.
From innings 7-12 the teams combined for only one run on five hits, all by the Dillas, as the Amarillo bullpen held the Colts to one base runner (a walk) and no hits over the game's final six innings to pick up the victory. San Angelo's pen provided five scoreless innings of relief before Jones' blast off of Tristan Gaines to lead off the 12th. Closer Ramon Geronimo struck out two of the three men he faced in the bottom of the twelfth to close down the Dillas victory. It was his fourth save of the season.
The win went to Chris Nyman (1-2) of the Dillas after he pitched three scoreless inning of relief without giving up a hit and striking out four. Gaines took the loss for San Angelo to fall to 0-1.
For the game, Jones went 4-6 for Amarillo with two homeruns, a double, a single, six RBI and three runs scored. Figueroa chipped in by going 3-6 with two singles, a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Shortstop Andrew De La Garza went 4-6 for the Dillas with three doubles, a single, and two runs scored.
Landreth went 2-6 for San Angelo with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Carter continued his hot hitting by going 2-5 with a homer, single, three RBI and two runs scored. The Colts will finish their four-game set against the Dillas with a 6:05 start from Foster Field on Sunday. Aaron Cunningham (0-2, 4.82 ERA) will toe the rubber for San Angelo against Taylor Allen (1-1, 9.01 ERA) of Amarillo. Sunday is also Weinermania presented by Knickerbocker Animal Hospital as fans can bring their Weinerdogs to the game and have them partake in the Weinerdog races. The broadcast of the game can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things underway at 5:50.
