May 25, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Memphis quarterback BRIAN JONES, Columbus wide receiver/defensive back TERENCE SAMUEL and Hawaii wide receiver/defensive back JOSHUA ROBINSON have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 8 of the 2004 season.

BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jones (6-2, 206, Toledo), a rookie, was responsible for nine touchdowns as he led the Memphis Xplorers to a 72-51 road victory over the Bakersfield Blitz Saturday night, putting the Xplorers to a game over .500 at 4-3. On the night Jones completed 22-of-27 passes for 298 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. He also rushed seven times for 31 yards and three additional touchdowns. After the first quarter finished tied at seven, Jones and the Xplorers scored 30 points in the second quarter to take the lead. In the second half Jones expanded this lead by throwing three touchdowns and running for two more while not turning the ball over to ensure the victory for the Xplorers. This is the first weekly award for Jones and the first for the Xplorers this season. The last Memphis player to win a weekly accolade was Kanzaki Jones, who earned the ADT Defensive Player of the Week honor in Week 7 of last season.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Samuel (6-0, 185, NW Mississippi J.C.), in his fourth season, single-handedly led a 54-50 Columbus Wardogs' comeback victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings Saturday night, which snapped the Wardogs' 17-game road losing streak. With the Wardogs down nine in the second half, Samuel began his charge with a 35-touchdown catch to pull the Wardogs within two points. On the ensuing kickoff Samuel stripped the ball from kick-returner Shadrick McAfee and recovered the fumble to give the Wardogs the ball. Three plays later Samuel caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to put the Wardogs up by five. Later in the fourth quarter Samuel added an interception. On the night Samuel totaled six catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns, on defense Samuel finished with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception, four passes defended and three tackles. It is the first weekly award for Samuel and he is the first Wardogs player to win a weekly award this season.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Robinson (6-0, 195, Idaho State), in his second season, helped the Hawaiian Islanders top the Central Valley Coyotes 54-48 Saturday night to move to 5-2 on the season and in sole possession of first place. On the night Robinson totaled 12.5 tackles, which set a team record and tied him for a season high with Florida's Quincy Sorrell who recorded 12.5 sacks in Week 6. Of Robinson's 12.5 tackles, 1.5 went for a loss. He also added a fumble recovery and an interception in the first half, which helped the Islanders get out to an early lead.
