San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- The San Angelo Colts' single-season home run leader is back.
The Colts announced Monday they have re-signed first baseman Daryl Jones. Jones began the season with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League, but he returns to San Angelo just in time for Opening Night.
Jones was traded to Bridgeport in exchange for future considerations on March 7, and had 21 at-bats in seven games for the Bluefish.
"I was the youngest guy in Bridgeport, and I got to talk with some players who have been around for a while," he said. "I learned so much about the game, and overall it was a good experience."
Jones hopes to take that knowledge and turn it into another terrific season at the plate.
Jones had a career-year with the Colts in 2011. He slammed a single-season franchise record 28 home runs, drove in a team-high 90 runs and batted .345. The eight-year veteran returns to the Colts looking to help drive them to another regular-season championship, and the opportunity to win the second league title in franchise history.
"I am excited to be back in San Angelo," Jones said. "We have a great group of guys and great fans. This city has shown me a lot of love and I love playing here."
Jones, 25, was a fourth-round draft pick by the San Diego Padres in 2004. He spent four years in their organization, and reached as high as the Class A Fort Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League.
In 2008 Jones came to the United League, and played for the Edinburg Coyotes. He also played for the Amarillo Dillas and the independent Frontier League's Florence Freedom before joining the Colts last year.
Now in his ninth professional season, Jones has a career .270 batting average with 78 home runs and 356 RBIs in 617 games.
The San Angelo Colts are a member of United League Baseball who will play their 13th season in 2012. Season ticket plans are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
