Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Soo Eagles in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).
The shootout lasted for 14 attempts between the teams.
Johnstown overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Tomahawks was down 2-0 after a goal by Soo's Mike Sabatini at 8:36 in the first period. Johnstown tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Shane Bednard at 15:10 in the third period.
The Eagles' power play was ineffective against the Tomahawks' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.
The Johnstown penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game the Tomahawks had been spending in the box. The 40 shots that Johnstown put on net surpassed the Tomahawks' average of 25.6 shots per game this season.
Omar Mullan also scored for Johnstown. Other players who recorded assists for Johnstown were Tyler Basham and Zack Wallace, who each chipped in one.
Soo's offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 23.3 shots per game it averages.
Soo additionally got points from Bradley Mueller, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Soo received assists from Ryan Urso and AJ Jarosz, who contributed one a piece.
Alex Okicki made 26 saves for Johnstown on 28 shots. The Tomahawks registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Colin Brennan rejected 37 shots on goal for the Eagles. Soo incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
