Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI- Just hours after Capitols head coach and general manager Luke Strand announced his decision to accept the position of associate head coach with the University of Wisconsin men's hockey program, one of his stars from the Capitols followed suit.

Winger Will Johnson announced his commitment to the Badgers on Wednesday afternoon, where he will begin play in the 2015-16 season.

The Santa Barbara, Calif. native came to the Capitols in the 2014-15 season after a successful stint with the Minnesota Magicians in the North American Hockey League, where he tallied 35 points as a 17-year-old.

The forward did not miss a beat in Madison, putting up a Capitols' season-best 10-game point streak from Nov. 8 to Dec. 13.

By the time the Capitols had hit the halfway point of their first season, Johnson had yet to go more than two games without registering a point. His 36 points through 30 games put him in the top 10 among USHL scorers.

Johnson's season abruptly ended in game number 30 in Muskegon on Jan. 10 due to a knee injury. Nevertheless, Johnson's prowess opened eyes nationally, and Strand successfully recruited Johnson to join him with the Badgers.

Johnson becomes the second Capitols player to commit to UW, joining defenseman Tony Stillwell. Johnson will, however, become the first Capitol to suit up for the Badgers, as Stillwell will remain with the Capitols for the 2015-16 season.

The Capitols also added one more UW commit in forward Mick Messner, the Capitols' first selection in Phase One of the 2015 USHL Draft.

Madison Capitols 2015-16 season tickets and 12-game packages for next season are available now by visiting www.MadCapsHockey.com. Packages can also be purchased by calling (608) 257-CAPS (2277).
