Indianapolis Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice announced today that defenseman Bernie John was named the CHL's Outstanding Defenseman for the 2003-04 regular season. Voting for the award was done by CHL Head Coaches, Public Relations staffs and selected media members from each market.
John, who is the top scorer in Ice franchise history, is having another one of his typical seasons as he currently leads all defensemen in pro hockey with 74 points (16G, 58A) in 60 games of work. He has also added nine power play goals and six game-winning goals.
"Obviously, it's a great honor for Bernie and well-deserved," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. "He has carried this team for the last five years both offensively and on the power play and is having his usual career-type season."
With 351 points (90G, 261A) in five years with the Ice, the four-time all-star and member of the team's 2000 CHL Championship Team is the top-scoring defenseman in the CHL since the start of the 1999-00 season. In league annals, he ranks fifth in scoring all-time among defensemen in CHL/WPHL history.
As for Ice lore, he is the all-time leader in both points and assists and is second in games played (298), trailing only IHL Ice forward Sean Williams (320 games).
John and the rest of his teammates have a crucial weekend on the horizon as the team is currently tied with Wichita (73 points) for the final two Northern Conference playoff berths with Memphis just one point back. The team has a three games in three nights set this weekend with games Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Sunday (5:00 p.m.) against the Colorado Eagles at the Pepsi Coliseum sandwiched by a Saturday night contest versus the Memphis RiverKings down in Southhaven, MS.
Tickets for the final two regular season home games can be purchased at all Ticketmaster locations including select Marsh Supermarkets, Karma Records, select L.S. Ayres, and the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Conseco Fieldhouse box offices, or by calling 239-5151 or online at ticketmaster.com.
