March 10, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas â The Central Hockey League announced today that Laredo Bucks goalie David Guerrera has been selected as the CHL Rookie of the Year. The first year pro from Wayne State University has helped the Bucks post the best record in the CHL at 48-8-6. Laredo hosts the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees this Friday and the Austin Ice Bats on Saturday at the Laredo Entertainment Center to close the regular season. Face-off both nights is set for 7:30 p.m. For tickets or more information call (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) or go online at www.laredobucks.com.
Guerrera has posted a 26-4-4 record. His 2.11 goals allowed average and save percentage of .931 are second best in the league.
"David truly deserves this award," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "He has played tremendous this season and goaltending has been a key element of our success as a team. When David got his chance he stepped up to the plate and got it done. We are proud of him and of all our players for their accomplishments this year."
Guerrera paired with Marco Emond to form one of the best goaltending duos in the league. When Emond was called up to San Antonio in the American Hockey League Guerrera stared 12 straight games from 1/09 - 2/03. He went 10-0-2 with a .934 save percentage and a 1.81 GAA.
"David has worked very hard this year," said Bucks team captain Jeff Bes. "He is very deserving of this award. He has gone out and proven himself as a professional this year."
Guerrera is tied for fourth in the league with four shutouts. He was named CHL Goalie of the Week in February.
"It is a great honor," said Guerrera. "The team deserves a lot of credit for playing well in front of the goalies all year."
Guerrera posted spectacular numbers at home going 14-0-0 with a 1.64 GAA and a .933 save percentage as the Bucks have posted a CHL best 27-2-1 record at the LEC. The Bucks set a new league record with 21 straight wins on home ice.
