John Dillinger Sets New League Strikeout Record in 1-0 Shutout of Bangor

August 28, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release

John Dillinger struck out 16, tying the league record for strikeouts in a single game and setting a new league record for strikeouts in a season, and the Ambassadors shutout the Bangor Lumberjacks 1-0 Thursday night in Maine.

Dillinger allowed just three hits and three walks through nine innings. The 16 strikeouts breaks the Ambassador team record for strikeouts in a single game, which was held by Dillinger with 14. It also ties the league record for strikeouts in a single game. Joel Bennett did the feat last season against the Ambassadors for the Jackals. Dillinger now has 147 strikeouts this season, breaking the record held by Michel Laplante, who had 143 for Quebec in 1999. He also improved on his league record for complete games in a season, now with 10.

The Ambassadors got their one run in the sixth inning. Jorge Diaz singled with one out off Bangor starter Santiago Henry, then Vic Davilla doubled in Diaz.

That would be all Dillinger would need, as he struck out the side in the ninth to finish it off in style and pick up his seventh win of the season. He is now 7-8 overall. Henry took the loss, he is now 5-4. The Ambassadors snapped a four game losing streak with the win and are now 15-27 in the second half. Bangor falls to 19-23. The Ambassadors now head to Quebec to finish the season with four games in Canada. Chris Kelly takes the mound tomorrow night for the Ambassadors.
