NEWARK, NJ, August 28-Jose Velasquez hit a pair of home runs and Jason Jacome tossed a complete-game eight hitter as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the Newark Bears, 8-4, Thursday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Surf won their fifth game in a row and the Bears dropped their fourth straight.
Velasquez hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning to give the Surf a 3-1 lead and then hit a two-run shot in the seventh to push the Atlantic City lead to 5-1. He finished 3-5 on the night with the two home runs, his 6th and 7th of the season, and 3 runs-batted-in. Teammate Juan Thomas crushed his league-leading 23rd home run, a three-run blast, in the eighth inning to put the game away. Thomas was 2-3 with 2 walks, the home run and 4 RBI on the night.
Jacome, the former New York Mets left-hander, tossed his third complete game of the season in upping his record to 3-2. Jacome allowed four runs and eight hits. He struck out four batters and did not walk any.
Bears right fielder Hipolito Martinez went 3-4 in the losing effort, including a solo home run in the seventh inning, his 4th of the year. Pete Maestrales hit a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, in the eighth inning.
Hut Smith (0-4) made his first start of the season and lasted only 2.2 innings, allowing three runs, six hits and four walks. Rolando Viera pitched well in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames before Alberto Castillo gave up five runs in three innings of work.
The Bears and Surf will play the final game of this three-game series Friday night at 7:05 PM as Jaime Navarro (9-4) starts for the Bears and Andy High (8-7) goes for Atlantic City.
