FC Tulsa News Release
TULSA - FC Tulsa continues to have its fingerprints on the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the CONCACAF region. Forward JoaquÃÂn Rivas has been called up by El Salvador to play in two First Round qualifiers for La Selecta. He will depart from FC Tulsa training camp this week to compete against Grenada and Montserrat on March 25 and 28, respectively. It's the second call up for an FC Tulsa player in the last week after defender Jorge Corrales was called into Cuba's national team for the same qualifiers.
"Getting called up to play for El Salvador is always an honor," Rivas said. "It means a lot to me, especially when it's the World Cup qualifiers. As a soccer player we live and dream of these moments."
Rivas has now made six career appearances for El Salvador, with his most recent appearance for his country coming in a December friendly against the United States. However, this will be the first World Cup qualifier for the 28-year-old forward.
"I know it's an honor for the players to play for their country, and it's a moment that they will not soon forget," said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. "It's also a privilege for our club to know that we are a destination for players that are competing at that level. We expect that they will return invigorated and integrate that experience gained with the environment we are creating with FC Tulsa."
Rivas' Salvadoran National Team is competing in Group A of the First Round of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, while Corrales' Cuba will compete in Group C. In order to advance to the Second Round, both El Salvador and Cuba will need to finish in first place in their respective groups with matches over the next two international windows.
Both Rivas and Corrales will miss two weeks of preseason action for FC Tulsa while playing in the World Cup qualifiers. They will rejoin FC Tulsa at the start of April to finish off preseason camp before the start of the 2021 USL Championship season.
