Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, September 3, 2003) Jim Devine has been named the new Athletic Trainer for the Charlotte Checkers for the 2003-04 season. The announcement was made today by Checkers Head Coach / General Manager Don MacAdam. Devine takes over for Teri LaSalle, who recently took over as the Athletic Trainer for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League.

"Jim has a great education and has team experience with the United Hockey League and American Hockey League," remarked MacAdam. "We talked to his references and received good reports on his work. He has all the tools to advance to a higher league, just like our two previous trainers have in the past two years."

Devine spent last season as Athletic Trainer for the Elmira Jackals of the United Hockey League. Prior to his stint with Elmira, Devine interned for a season with the Springfield Falcons of the AHL. The Brockport, New York native graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He also worked as a trainer with the University of Massachusetts hockey team, an NCAA Division 1 program and member of prestigious Hockey East. Devine also holds a degree as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

"I'm very excited about coming to Charlotte," commented Devine. "This is a good opportunity for me to move up to a higher league, and certainly with the success of former trainers Mike Derecola and Teri LaSalle, it's a great place to learn and grow. I've heard Charlotte is a great city and the Checkers strong affiliation with the New York Rangers and Hartford Wolf Pack was another good reason to come to Charlotte."

Devine will also be spending some time at the Hartford Wolf Pack's training camp before arriving in Charlotte in late September.

The Checkers will begin their 11th season in the ECHL with the regular season and home opener Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. hosting the Gwinnett (GA) Gladiators at Cricket Arena.

The Checkers will also stage one preseason game at Cricket Arena on Monday, October 13 when they'll host the Columbia Inferno at 7:00 p.m. All tickets for the preseason game will be reserved and priced at $5.00. Individual tickets for all regular season and preseason games will go on sale on Monday, September 22.

Season tickets for the 2003-04 season are now on sale. Season ticket prices start as low as $245.00. Mini-plans and group discounts are also available. Call the Checkers office at (704) 342-4423 for further information.
