Augusta GreenJackets News Release
North Augusta, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) avenged Tuesday's shutout loss with a dominant shutout win of their own, blanking first-place Charleston (32-18, 59-57) 4-0 on Wednesday. The GreenJackets (22-27, 53-62) got four hits from Ambioris Tavarez and six stellar frames from the electrifying Jhancarlos Lara while evening up the series at a game each.
Jhancarlos Lara carried a 11-inning scoreless streak into the contest following two stellar outings during the road trip, and picked up where he left off with a 1-2-3 first inning. Augusta shook off their 19-inning scoreless drought with aplomb in the first frame, with Ambioris Tavarez singling and stealing two bases before a Drew Compton groundout brought him home.
Lara continued to shove through the second and third innings, retiring the first nine men he faced. In the bottom of the third, Ambioris Tavarez doubled, before a two-out Jace Grady double brought him home to double the lead at 2-0. Lara gave up his first hit in the top of the fourth, but that would be the lone baserunner he surrendered, as the youngster would push through six full innings while striking out nine and keeping the basepaths clear. The GreenJackets yet again used Ambioris Tavarez to score, when he recorded his third hit to lead off the fifth, stealing another base, and scoring on Cam Magee's fielder's choice to put Augusta up 3-0.
Lara was replaced by Cory Wall, who gave up Augusta's second and final hit of the day but kept the RiverDogs scoreless from the seventh through the eighth. Tavarez recorded his fourth hit of the game in the seventh for his first career four-hit contest, and Augusta added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a costly two-out error to put the home side up 4-0. Shay Schanaman entered and worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the shutout win.
The two baserunners allowed was the lowest in a nine-inning game for Augusta this year, while the contest marked the sixth time the GreenJackets pitching staff has not surrendered a walk or a hit-by-pitch. Tavarez joins Jace Grady, Cory Acton, and Justin Janas as the only GreenJackets players with a four-hit game this season.
Augusta wraps up the 2023 home slate from now until September 3rd! The GreenJackets take on the Charleston RiverDogs and the Salem Red Sox over the next two weeks.
