JetHawks Take Opener With 5-3 Win

April 25, 2011 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The same lineup that produced 15 runs and 21 hits in Saturday's route of Modesto was held in check on Monday night, as the Quakes dropped the opening game of a four-game set to the Lancaster JetHawks, by a 5-3 tally at The Epicenter.

JetHawks' starter Robby Donovan (2-1) was sharp, firing a season-high eight innings, limiting the Quakes to just two runs on seven hits, helping Lancaster end their three-game losing streak and cutting Rancho's lead in the South Division down to just one game.

Jose Altuve knocked in two runs and fell a home run shy of the cycle to lead Lancaster.

Tied at 2-2 in the sixth, Quakes' reliever Josh Walter allowed a one-out bunt hit by Grant Hogue and then walked Jay Austin. After getting Jonathan Villar to fly out for the second out, Walter (1-1) fell behind Jose Altuve, who eventually hit a 2-1 pitch off the center-field fence for what turned out to be the game-winning hit. Both runners scored to put the JetHawks in front for good at 4-2.

Lancaster added a run in the seventh against Dodgers' rehabbing left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo. Kuo walked the lead-off man, Austin Wates, who would steal second and then score on an RBI single from catcher Rene Garcia, making it a 5-2 game.

Donovan fell three outs shy of the complete game, as he handed it off to closer Kirk Clark in the ninth. Clark surrendered a solo homer to Tony Delmonico with one out, Delmonico's first of the year to pull Rancho to within two at 5-3. After Gorman Erickson doubled with two outs, J.T. Wise entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Rafael Ynoa. Wise grounded out to second though, ending the game and giving Clark his sixth save in as many chances.

The Quakes and JetHawks traded runs early, as both teams scored one run each in the second and then again in the fourth. After Wates hit a solo homer off Quakes' starter Greg Wilborn, Rancho answered with a ground-rule RBI double from Ramon Jean, evening the game at 1-1. Lancaster retook the lead when Austin pulled an RBI single to right field off of Wilborn in the fourth. The Quakes answered again, as Erickson knocked in Angelo Songco with a run-scoring double, tying the game at 2-2.

The Quakes (10-8) look to get back on track on Tuesday night, sending JonMichael Redding (2-1) to the mound against Lancaster's Jake Buchanan (2-1).
