Jeremy Schappert Joins University of Manitoba Bisons

Kent,May 13, 2010 - Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell is pleased to announce defenseman Jeremy Schappert has committed to the University of Manitoba Bisons for the 2010-11 season.

Schappert played five seasons with the Thunderbirds and used up his WHL eligibility this past season. Schappert appeared in 264 games in five seasons and had 16 goals and 62 assists for 78 points. Last season he was an assistant captain on the T-Birds and had a career year with 10 goals and 38 points for 48 points.

"We are pleased that Jeremy has signed with the Bisons and will be taking advantage of the WHL Scholarship program," said Farwell. "Jeremy has been a big part of our organization for the last five years. We wish him the success at the University of Manitoba."

"I am looking forward to joining the Bisons," said Schappert. "I enjoyed my five seasons in Seattle and am very happy to be taking advantage of the WHL Scholarship program."

We expect him to fill gaps on defense resulting in graduations of Kip Workman and David Brown. Jeremy is a great person with solid values and character that will fit into the culture of the program. On the ice, he is solid defensively with intelligence along with puck skills and has the potential to make a big contribution to our team offensively."

For every season a player plays in the WHL, they receive a full year guaranteed scholarship, including tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees, to a post- secondary institution of their choice. Schappert having played five years in Seattle earned a five-year scholarship.

Since 1993, Western Hockey League Clubs have provided close to 3,000 Scholarships representing an investment in excess of $9 million, making the WHL the leading provider of hockey scholarships in Western Canada.

The WHL Scholarship not only encourages its graduates to pursue a post-secondary education, it also affords graduates the opportunity to continue playing hockey at an elite level in the Canadian University or College systems. Each year over 230 WHL graduates receive a WHL Scholarship.
