
Jaxx stay tied atop North Division with thrashing of Braves

PEARL, MISS - The Diamond Jaxx (34-28) scored five runs in the second and third innings on Saturday night, cruising to a 10-2 victory over the M-Braves (30-30) at Trustmark Park, in Pearl, MS. Luis Munoz (8-6) wins his team leading eighth game of the year, dealing a season long, seven shutout innings. Munoz has now thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings on the mound for the Jaxx. Marshall Hubbard, Rich Poythress, Travis Garcia, and Jose Yepez all collected two hit nights for West Tenn. Also, Travis Garcia tallied two doubles and two RBI, and Marshall Hubbard drove in a pair. Jose Yepez drove in a season high three runs for the Jaxx in the win. The Jaxx stay in a first place tie with the Tennessee Smokies who knocked off Mobile, 7-5 at Smokies Park on Saturday night.
The Jaxx began the scoring in the top of second by posting a five spot on the scoreboard. Jose Yepez has picked up an RBI in his first three games since returning from Single-A High Desert, driving in Rich Poythress and Callix Crabbe with a single. Travis Garcia scored on throwing error and Jose Yepez came into score on Marshall Hubbard's sacrifice fly to left. The Diamond Jaxx took a 5-0 lead after the top of the second inning.
Travis Garcia drove in Rich Poythress and Matt Mangini with a two-RBI double in the top of the third. Jose Yepez followed with an RBI single scoring Callix Crabbe and the Jaxx took an 8-0 lead. Kyle Cofield (10-5), the Braves starter left the game after the single by Yepez and dealt just two plus innings. Ezequiel Carrera was the first batter to face Michael Broadway and Carrera reached on an error by first baseman, Ernesto Mejia. Travis Garcia came in to score on the Braves fourth error of the game. Then, Marshall Hubbard brought in the Jaxx 10th run of the game, Jose Yepez from third base with an RBI single up the middle. After the top of the third, the Jaxx led 10-0.
The M-Braves finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Willie Cabrera blasted a two-run homerun off of Jaxx reliever, Luis Villarreal, plating Benji Johnson, making the score 10-2. Luis Munoz (8-6) left the game after seven shutout innings. Munoz allowed just two base hits while striking out four and walking two in the outing.
The Jaxx will try to take the series lead on Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Park, with game three beginning at 1:05 PM. RHP Dan Cortes (1-3, 5.83) will make the start for the Jaxx and LHP Jose Ortegano (4-2, 3.41) will toss for the M-Braves. The Jaxx lead the season series over the Braves 12-11.
