Knoxville Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - In his ongoing recovery from Tommy John surgery this past offseason, Tyler Colvin continues to amaze. The Tennessee Smokies outfielder put together another stellar effort at the plate Saturday night, catapulting the Smokies to a 7-5 win over the Mobile BayBears at Smokies Park. The win keeps Tennessee at the front of the Southern League North Division standings, tied with West Tenn at 34-28 in the season's second half.
Colvin and the Smokies came out firing on all cylinders Saturday. In the first, Colvin cleared the bases on a three-run triple to left-center to put the Smokies up 3-0. Colvin would score himself in the frame on a Marquez Smith single to right to make it 4-0 Smokies after one.
Mobile would do themselves no favors in the second as 3B Ricardo Sosa's throwing error on Ty Wright grounder brought home Starlin Castro and put Tennessee up 5-0. And after an Evan Frey home run brought Mobile to within 5-1 in the top of the third off Smokies starter Jeremy Papelbon, the Smokies responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to go up 6-1.
Colvin provided the final run for the Smokies on the night. After Mobile cut the Smokies' lead to 6-4 in the fifth, he responded in the sixth by drilling a Leyson Septimo pitch over the right field wall for his 12th home run of the year. The solo shot put the Smokies up 7-4.
Although Mobile would close the gap to 7-5 in the eighth, the Smokies bullpen put the clamps on the BayBears' offense for the most part in sealing the victory. Marcos Mateo, Dustin Sasser and Brian Schlitter (S, 21) combined to allow only the one run over four combined innings.
Papelbon (6-5) picked up the win for the Smokies Saturday night, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He struck out one and walked two.
Thomas Layne fell to 0-3 on the year with Mobile, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits in three innings of work. He would walk three and strike out two.
Tennessee continues their five-game series against Mobile Sunday afternoon at 5:00 at Smokies Park. The Smokies will send RHP Andrew Cashner (2-3, 3.57) to the mound against RHP Wes Roemer (8-8, 4.13) for the BayBears. Tickets the game, which will feature a post-game concert by â80s tribute band The Breakfast Club, as part of â80s Night at Smokies Park, can be purchased at www.smokiesbaseball.com, by calling (865) 286-2300, or at the Smokies Park ticket office.
