Jaxx Rout Braves, Win Sixth Straight

PEARL, MS. (May 17, 2010) - The Diamond Jaxx (21-16) win their sixth straight game on Monday night over the Mississippi Braves (18-20) at Trustmark Park, 9-1. The Jaxx held Mississippi scoreless for 17 2/3 consecutive innings until Travis Jones ended it with a homer in the bottom of the ninth. Dan Cortes, Jorden Merry, Mumba Rivera and Aaron Jensen combined to shutout the Braves through eight innings. West Tenn wins their second straight series and fifth overall by winning the first three games against the Braves. The road record for the Jaxx is now 14-4, the best in the Southern League. The Jaxx also added their league leading 43rd and 44th homers of the season.

Carlos Peguero had been slumping, but broke out on Monday night with a 3-for-5 night at the plate with a homer and two RBI. Johan Limonta was 2-for-5 and added his 3rd and 4th doubles of the series. Limonta also picked up three more RBI's, giving him seven in the series. Luis Oliveros and Alex Liddi each registered two-hit nights.

Jaxx starter Dan Cortes left the game after two scoreless innings on the mound with an injury. Jorden Merry (1-0), in his Double-A debut earned his first win by dealing two scoreless frames and striking out two. Jacob Thompson (2-3) took the loss for the M-Braves and surrendered nine runs in just 3 2/3 innings Monday.

The Jaxx got out of the gate quickly on Monday night in Mississippi getting back-to-back homeruns from Carlos Peguero and Alex Liddi. The homers put the Jaxx up on the Braves 2-0.

West Tenn brought four runs across in the top of the second inning and batted nine. Luis Oliveros doubled home Dustin Ackley to give the Jaxx a 3-0 advantage. Leury Bonilla brought in Oliveros with a single to make it 4-0. Carlos Peguero added his second RBI of the game with a single that scored Bonilla and Limonta hit his first of two doubles to score Peguero and the Jaxx led the Braves 6-0 after two.

The Jaxx added three more against Braves' starter Jacob Thompson in the fourth inning with two outs. Limonta doubled in Peguero after he singled and Liddi after he reached on an error. The double for Limonta is his 11th of the year. Carlos Triunfel singled home Limonta to make it 9-0.

The only run for the Braves came on a solo homer with two outs in the ninth, against Luis Munoz. The homer was the first of the year for Jones.

The Jaxx and Braves will meet again on Tuesday night at 7:05 at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS. Veteran RHP Steve Bray (1-1, 3.74) makes the start for the Jaxx and LHP Scott Diamond (1-3, 5.06) goes for the Braves.
