Bastardo's No-Hit Bid Falls Short as Lookouts Cruise Over BayBears

MOBILE, Ala. - Southpaw Alberto Bastardo carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium as the Chattanooga Lookouts blitzed the BayBears with a 7-0 victory.
Bastardo (3-3) went through 6.1 innings without allowing a knock and finally did when Ed Easley laced a clean double over left fielder Elian Herrera's head in the seventh. Bastardo exited after seven innings of one-hit ball while striking out seven.
Chattanooga (16-21) did all their plate damage in the early frames against Tom Layne (4-2), who was pulled after only 2.1 innings. Layne walked Eddy Perez to begin the second and watched him score two batters later on an infield chopper off the bat of Scott Van Slyke. Trayvon Robinson, who singled after the Perez walk, scored on a two-out wild pitch to make it 2-0.
It was the third inning when the Lookouts put the game out of reach. Alfredo Amezaga was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Layne made a poor throw after a bouncer off the bat of Herrera. Amezaga touched the dish after a single by Corey Smith. Herrera came home when Mike Rivera doubled off the fence in center.
Perez continued the hit parade with a two-run single to allow Smith and Rivera to score. Layne walked two more batters before being pulled in favor of Kyler Newby. Newby walked Amezaga with the bases loaded to score Perez with two outs.
It was Newby's only mistake of the night as he pulled down 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen while striking out seven. Reid Mahon tossed a pair of scoreless frames while Jeff Dietz fanned two in the ninth for the BayBears (18-19).
