Jax Sign Three More

November 16, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, November 16, 2007 - The Portland LumberJax have signed forwards Derek Malawsky and Cory Conway to one-year agreements and rookie transition player Brodie Barfoot to a two-year agreement, as was announced today by Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan.

Malawsky was selected by the Jax in the second round (No. 24) of the National Lacrosse League's Dispersal Draft from the Arizona Sting. The nine-year veteran has scored at least 50 points in eight of his nine seasons. During the Sting's 2007 run to the Champion's Cup Final, Malawsky was fifth on the team in goals scored (20), fourth in assists (35) and fourth in points (55).

"Derek is a premier left handed offensive player in the NLL," said Keenan. "He's going to make our Power Play better and our five-on-five offense better. We're thrilled to have him on board."

Conway was selected by the Jax in the second round (No. 16 overall) of the 2007 NLL Entry Draft. The former Stony Brook University product played for the Victoria Shamrocks this past summer in British Columbia's Junior A League. He tied for the team lead with 68 points (38 goals and 30 assists).

A sixth round draft pick (No. 72 overall) in the Entry Draft, Barfoot played for the Orillia Rama-Hammind Kings of Major Series Lacrosse's Junior A League, scoring a goal and adding an assist in nine games of action this past season.

"Conway and Barfoot are two young guys capable of playing in the NLL," said Keenan. "They're both very young but we think they have the skill and athleticism to make an impact."
