Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, Oct. 23, 2006 - Ryan Sharp signed a one-year contract today, becoming the tenth player to sign with the LumberJax for the 2007 season. Sharp greatly contributed to the team's offense last season and represented the franchise with Dallas Eliuk and Brodie Merrill at the National Lacrosse League (NLL) 2006 All-Star Game in Toronto, Ontario.

Sharp joined the Jax through the 2005 NLL Expansion Draft as the seventh overall selection from the Calgary Roughnecks. During his 2005 rookie campaign in Calgary, he played in two games, scoring one goal and collecting eight looseballs. The 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pound transition player saw improvement during his second season with Portland where he scored 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points while collecting 137 looseballs. He ranked second on the team in looseballs behind Merrill.

"Ryan is one of the top transition players in the league," said Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan. "He combines good defensive abilities, speed and a finishing touch around the net to make him an excellent two-way player."

His development within the league earned him a spot on the 2006 Western Division All-Star Team with Jax veteran goalie Eliuk and standout rookie Merrill. The Peterborough, Ontario native earned his place amongst the greatest players in the NLL during the All-Star Game by assisting on two goals and collecting 12 looseballs in front of the 15,924 fans.

This past summer, the budding star kept his lacrosse skills sharp by competing in the Canadian summer league for the Peterborough Lakers. With the Lakers, Sharp helped his team win the coveted Mann Cup by scoring five goals throughout the five games series.

The Jax have now signed Adam Bysouth, Rich Morgan, Ray Guze, Mike Hominuck, Ryder Bateman, Jed Prossner, D.J. Driscoll, Simon Robillard and Matt Holman while receiving rights to Scott Stapleford and Tyler Heavenor. Dallas Eliuk, Pat Jones, Brodie Merrill, Peter Morgan and Ryan Powell are entering the second season of their individual two-year contracts. The LumberJax training camp takes place in mid-November in Vancouver, B.C where all returning players and new signees will compete for a position on the Jax roster for the upcoming 2007 season.
