Maywood Laguneros News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Dec. 12, 2004) – The Long Beach Jam (6-2) of the American Basketball Association (ABA) never could grab control of Sunday's contest with the Portland Reign (3-3) at the Pyramid in Long Beach, losing 108-106 in front of a crowd of 879.

The Jam fell behind early, 21-8, but went on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 23 near the end of the first quarter. The teams battled back and forth and entered the fourth quarter deadlocked at 81. With 1:37 remaining in the game, the Jam's Joe Buck hit a shot to give his team a 100-99 lead. It would be the last time the Jam would be in front.

The Reign scored on their next two possessions while stopping the Jam, pushing their lead to 104-100. With the score 104-102, the Jam failed to secure a missed Reign free throw by John Outlaw. Leroy Herd grabbed the rebound, essentially ending the contest as Portland once again went up by four, 106-102. With time expiring, a Ramel Curry 30-foot desperation heave missed its target, giving the Jam their first home loss of the 2004-05 season.

Maurice Spillers led the Jam with 30 points, six assists and three steals and Ramel Curry added 22 points in the loss, including the team's last six points. For the Reign, Robert Day scored a game-high 33 points and Byron Johnson grabbed 17 rebounds.

The Jam have two road games this week, Tuesday at Los Angeles and Friday at Ontario before returning home Sunday, Dec. 19 at the Pyramid at 2 p.m. to face Orange County.
