Jamieson and Hurricanes Lacrosse a 'Perfect' Match
March 21, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, March 21)... Rochester Knighthawks forward Cody Jamieson knows how to put up big numbers on the lacrosse field, but Friday afternoon he will put up some bigger numbers. At 3:30 p.m., Jamieson will join Greece Hurricanes Lacrosse as they donate money to Golisano Children's Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center as part of their "We Got Your Back" anti-bullying campaign.
The Hurricanes will donate $1,350 to Golisano Children's Hospital in the name of Cody's cousin, Julez Monture. The original $450 was raised at the Knighthawks' January 21st game, which has been personally matched by Jamieson. The third $450 check was donated by the Knighthawks Charitable Foundation, Inc. "Jammer" encouraged lacrosse fans to donate to the anti-bullying campaign, as well.
"This is something I care deeply about," said Jamieson. "If anyone else would make a donation it would be greatly appreciated. We all know someone close to us that has had to deal with this issue whether we know it or not. It is something that needs to be addressed more."
Fans can send checks to Golisano Children's Hospital via the Rochester Knighthawks Office, located at 144 Exchange Street (Suite 102). Donations can also be dropped off at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, Ontario. If received by Friday, March 23rd, the funds will be included in the donation to Golisano Children's Hospital.
Media interested in attending should arrive at the Strong Memorial Hospital lobby, located at 601 Elmwood Ave., at 3:30 p.m. A member of URMC's public relations team will escort media up to the event. If someone from the PR team is not immediately available, please contact the main public relations office at (585) 275-3676.
In November, Jamieson and his teammates signed the Hurricanes' anti-bullying pledge. The slogan, "We Got Your Back," was developed by Hurricanes' Team Coordinator Anne Marie Leonardi and is present on the team's bracelets. All 115 kids and 16 coaches in the youth lacrosse organization signed the pledge to signify that the Hurricanes will "stand up against bullying and our teams will not stand for it."
The 24 year old from Six Nations has taken an active role in the Rochester community since getting selected first overall in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft. Jamieson has taken a stand against an epidemic that 56 percent of all students have witnessed at school and that 71 percent of students consider an ongoing problem, according to bullyingstatistics.org. Leonardi was excited to receive continued support from the Rochester Knighthawks.
"The Hurricanes and I are so proud of how many children and adults we have touched with this campaign. We have a deep passion for this cause. We truly feel if we can help one child it is all worth it," said Leonardi. " We are very happy to have Cody and the Knighthawks help us spread the word. We try to have the kids in our organization give back to the community whether it's sending care packages overseas to our troops or donating to our local food bank. We are honored to give this gift to the children at Golisano Children's Hospital."
To join the effort against bullying and support the Hurricanes, go to www.greecehurricanes.com or contact Anne Marie Leonardi at (585) 746-3779. The Knighthawks will host the defending champion Toronto Rock on Saturday, March 24th at 7:30 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena.
